Wake Tech Honored as a “Model of Efficiency”

WTCC Advising Department Recognized by University Business Magazine

RALEIGH, NC (April 10, 2012) - Wake Technical Community College is one of 16 colleges and universities nationwide recognized by University Business magazine’s Models of Efficiency program, which is sponsored by Higher One, a technology and payment services company serving higher education. The Models of Efficiency program recognizes innovative approaches for streamlining higher education operations through technology or business process improvements.

“Efficient business operations translate into better experiences for students and administrators alike, and the Models of Efficiency program aims to encourage schools to prioritize service,” said Tim Goral, editor-in-chief of University Business. “Wake Technical Community College stands out for developing a very effective solution to a challenging situation.”

At Wake Tech, a clipboard sign in process was replaced by on-the-spot data entry, saving time and effort for student advising office staff. Instead of transferring information from sign in sheet to spreadsheet, the new system allows staffers to key data into Microsoft Excel when students sign in. Time spent on the task dropped from 96 hours a year to about 16. Paper was eliminated and the quantity and quality of data improved.

“I saw a lot of duplication of data entry,” says advisor Tom Manning. “I thought there must be an easier way to do this.” Manning implemented the new system with the support of Advising and Retention Dean Kevin Brown. “It’s something that, with minimal cost, we can maintain and use for years to come.”
In addition to Wake Technical Community College, honorees include Catawba College, North Carolina; George Mason University, Virginia; George Washington University, Washington, D.C.; Houston Community College, Texas; Lakeland Community College, Ohio; Mercer University, Georgia; Northwest Arkansas Community College; Ogeechee Technical College, Georgia; Salisbury University, Maryland; Texas A&M University, College Station; Texas A&M University International, Laredo; University of Central Oklahoma; University of Virginia; Victor Valley College, California; and Wilkes University, Pennsylvania.

The program is sponsored by Higher One, a technology and payment services company solely focused on higher education.
